Nicki Minaj

Just after Christmas I was lucky enough to go and see Nicki Minaj live in Dubai. She appeared at Meydan Racecourse and although we waited over four hours for her to come on stage, it was definitely worth the wait! Getting there early meant that we were really close to the front and by the end of the gig were actually on the front row!

I’ve always been a fan of Nicki’s music, but seeing her live has taken my love for her to another level. Her lyrics seemed so raw and I believed every word she said. Ever since she performed her part of Drake’s ‘Make Me Proud’, I’m not ashamed to say that it is the anthem to one of my many alarms in the mornings. It’s one of those songs that makes you want to get up and just make someone proud. Well that’s a good enough excuse for me to get up for uni in the morning!

Although Nicki has a ‘rudegirl’ image, when she spoke during her concert, what she portrayed was very different. Many of Nicki’s songs are explicit, however, not once during her concert did she swear, and she was very aware of her young audience, which was nice to see from someone in her position. There was also a lot of emphasis on kids staying in school and girls not giving their “cookies away to every Tom, Dick and Harry.” Which was a particular favourite of mine, girl power and all!

The wigs, make-up and outfits during the concert didn’t disappoint either! My personal favourite was a more subtle look with a baby-pink short wig and and pink robe during her performance of ‘Marilyn Monroe’. It was a more gentle look and suited the song perfectly.

The Meydan Racecourse was a fantastic venue and watching Nicki Minaj with the sky line of Dubai and in particular the Burj Khalifa in the background was particularly spectacular. Overall, I had a fantastic time and now have even more admiration for her music and would jump at the chance to see her again!
